About the Dog Age Calculator
Dogs age faster than humans, but not at the simple "one year equals seven" rate many people assume. A dog reaches roughly 15 human years in its first year, about 24 by its second, and then ages more gradually — with larger breeds aging faster than smaller ones.
This calculator uses a simplified, size-adjusted estimate: about 15 human years for year one, +9 for year two, then a per-year rate that scales with breed size (small dogs age slower, giant breeds faster). Frequently asked questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?+
No. That old rule is a rough average and overstates aging in the first two years. Dogs mature very quickly early on (about 15 human years in year one) and then age more slowly, at a rate that depends on breed size.
Why do larger dogs age faster?+
Larger and giant breeds have shorter average lifespans and reach senior stages earlier, so each calendar year after age two counts for more human-equivalent years than it does for a small dog.
At what age is a dog considered senior?+
It varies by size, but most dogs are considered mature around age 7 and senior around 10. Giant breeds may reach senior status a year or two earlier.
What do the four size categories mean?+
They’re based on adult weight: small (up to 20 lbs), medium (21–50 lbs), large (51–100 lbs), and giant (over 100 lbs). The bigger the category, the faster each year after age two counts.
